Uses:-
Glimepiride 4 mg + Metformin 1000 mg bilayered tablet is a combination medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin. Metformin, a biguanide, reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. Together, these drugs help lower blood sugar levels effectively in adults who are not adequately controlled with diet, exercise, and either drug alone.
Side Effects:-
- Hypoglycemia: Glimepiride can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if meals are skipped, delayed, or if there is unplanned vigorous physical activity. Symptoms include sweating, dizziness, shaking, hunger, and confusion. Patients should be aware of these signs and know how to manage them.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Metformin may cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. These symptoms are more common when starting the medication and usually decrease over time as the body adapts to the drug.
- Weight Changes: Glimepiride can lead to weight gain due to increased insulin production, which promotes fat storage. Metformin, on the other hand, is generally weight-neutral or may cause slight weight loss, helping to balance the overall weight impact.
- Lactic Acidosis: Although rare, metformin can cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, characterized by muscle pain, breathing difficulties, stomach pain, dizziness, and irregular heartbeat. This risk is higher in patients with kidney or liver problems.
- Allergic Reactions: Some patients may experience allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing. Immediate medical attention is required if these symptoms occur.
