Uses:-
Glimepiride 3 mg + Metformin 1000 mg bilayered tablet is a combination medication designed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glimepiride, a sulfonylurea, stimulates the pancreas to release insulin, while metformin, a biguanide, decreases glucose production in the liver and enhances insulin sensitivity. This combination works together to effectively lower blood sugar levels in patients who cannot achieve adequate control with diet, exercise, and metformin or glimepiride alone.
Side Effects:-
- Hypoglycemia: The glimepiride component can cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if meals are skipped or delayed, or if the patient engages in intense exercise. Symptoms include sweating, dizziness, confusion, and tremors.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Metformin may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort, particularly when starting the medication. These effects often diminish over time as the body adjusts.
- Weight Changes: Glimepiride can lead to weight gain due to increased insulin production. However, metformin may help mitigate this effect as it is generally weight-neutral or can cause slight weight loss.
- Lactic Acidosis: Although rare, metformin can cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, characterized by muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, and slow or irregular heartbeat. This risk increases in patients with kidney or liver problems.
- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, and difficulty breathing. Immediate medical attention is necessary if these symptoms occur.
